All Boys Aren’t Blue Book Cover

New York Times bestseller, All Boys Aren’t Blue is the memoir-manifesto of George M. Johnson about their experiences growing up as a queer Black person. Johnson writes about the shared experiences of queer Black youth, and acknowledges that, even if you don’t have someone in your life of whom you share those experiences with, you are valued. As George M. Johnson describes, they are not sharing only their own story, but "telling the story of millions of queer people who never got a chance to tell theirs."

I wanted to relate Johnson’s experience to a wider audience with these covers. All Boys Aren’t Blue is a representation of just how many queer black folks grow up feeling out of place. Doubled with the idea of self-acceptance, I wanted to express that there’s nothing out of place, and you are exactly who you're supposed to be. I used a lot of imagery based on a grid, and breaking out of that grid, but the composition I ended up using was one that’s a bit of a non-traditional looking book cover.
